While there are very few places on the island that I’d actively tell people to avoid, there are a couple of locations that regularly look great on booking sites but end up disappointing visitors because they don’t match the reality of how most people experience Mykonos.

Paradise Beach

Paradise Beach is one of the most famous names on the island and it’s also one of the most misunderstood.

Many first-time visitors see the beautiful beach, famous clubs, and central location and assume it’s an ideal base for exploring Mykonos. In reality, Paradise Beach is first and foremost a party destination. If that’s exactly what you’re looking for, you’ll probably love it.

If you’re planning romantic dinners, relaxing beach days, exploring Mykonos Town, or getting a decent night’s sleep, there are much better options elsewhere on the island.

Unless you’re specifically visiting Mykonos for the party scene, we’d recommend staying somewhere else and visiting Paradise Beach for the day instead.

Villas Deep In The Interior

This is the mistake that catches a lot of travelers. You’ll find a beautiful villa with a private pool, incredible views, and rates that seem significantly cheaper than staying near the beach or in Mykonos Town.

Then reality arrives. You’re 15 minutes from the nearest restaurant – twenty minutes from town – thirty minutes from the beach you actually wanted to visit. And you are faced with the reality that every meal, sunset drink, beach day, and evening out require organizing transport.

This becomes even more frustrating during peak summer when taxis can be scarce and expensive. Saving €50 per night on accommodation can quickly disappear once you’re paying for taxis every time you want dinner.
