Saving Money At Europcar

We have already covered how to save on car rentals with Hertz, Enterprise, Avis, National, Budget, Dollar, and Thrifty. Now it’s time to look at another popular choice for travelers, Europcar.
Europcar is part of the Europcar Mobility Group but operates as its own brand with separate operations and partnerships.
When booking with Europcar, the main field to pay attention to is the “negotiated rate” section. This is where you can enter your coupon code to get a discount.
The Best Europcar Negotiated Rates
This is probably what you’re looking for. What are the different coupon codes that are available to use at Europcar?
From our research, there aren’t a significant number of codes compared to other car rental agencies, but we’ve always found that Europcar always had the best rates even without promo codes so this is definitely a nice cherry on top.
We have gathered into a single, easy-to-use chart for easy reference.
When analyzing coupon codes, keep in mind that you can automatically get 15% by joining the Privilege For You loyalty program.
What’s A Europcar Coupon Code?
For Europcar, there’s a distinction between coupon codes and negotiated rate.
If you’re looking for corporate codes, you’re looking to use negotiated rate. Coupon codes, on the other hand, are promos/discounts generated for consumers that are distributed by various outlets.
As an example, in Iceland, you can use EPICICELAND to save 10%. This is just one of the many different codes that we have for our exclusive article for car rentals in Iceland.
Other Ways To Find Deals At Europcar
Aside from Europcar coupon codes, you can also try to find deals other ways.
Try a car rental aggregator
Sometimes the best deal isn’t actually at Europcar. That’s where you need to do some homework to figure that out.
To help with that, you’ll need to use a few tools that we recommend:
Both are decent although we usually lean towards Discover Cars because of their user interface.
If you’ve never used these, they are very similar to Kayak and Skyscanner in the flight world of things. You search one place and it gives you all of the options for your car rental specifications. This way, you can see the base prices for all the rental companies servicing that location (i.e. airport).
This is a great way to spot sweet spots that you never knew existed. This is also where companies like ACE Rent A Car can sometimes stand out because it’s not a company that people think about.
If you’re looking for affordable car rentals, another company that you shouldn’t overlook is ACE Car Rental. Use our special code, AWESOME24, to save 10% on all rates.
PRICE CHECK AT ACECheck for seasonal offers
Every season/quarter, Europcar has special offers that usually range from 10%-15% off. Some are region-specific and others are quite wide open.
To find what the current deal is, just head to the Europcar deals page. These deals are open to all customers so they’re safe and easy to use.
We also share this on our Deals page and Car Rental Corporate Codes Guide.
Sign up for the Europcar newsletter
If you sign up for their newsletter, you’ll get a link to a page that automatically gets you a 10% discount for your first rental.
Use the Europcar app
As part of an effort to get more users to book rentals through their app, they’ve been known to offer discounts just by using it.
Join the Privilege For You loyalty program
We have more details further below but the short of it is that if you’re a member (free to join), you automatically get 10% off.
Also, when it’s your birthday, you’ll get 20% off coupon code.
Partners of Europcar discounts
If you’re a member of specific frequent flyer, hotel, rail, and credit card programs, you can also be eligible for some sort of discount.
With these, there aren’t any negotiated rates or coupons. Instead, you have to go through the specific program’s landing pages.
To make your life easier, we’ve compiled them together in this table and have also included their earning bonuses as well.

How Good is Europcar?

How does Europcar compare to other companies? This can be tricky to answer because every rental situation is different.
Overall, we’d say that anecdotally, Europcar is one of our favourites because we’ve always been able to find sweet rates that all other companies can’t get close to (even without a negotiated rate). This was the case for our road trip around southern Ireland, 6 days in Atacama, Chile, and also when we were in Cape Town for 1 week.
In terms of rental experience, while it does feel like we’re going with a lower-end brand, the truth is that we’ve never had an issues with Europcar.
One-Way Rentals
If you’re looking for a discount on one-way rentals, you won’t find it with Europcar. Here’s why:
Rate increases on one-way rentals – While they don’t charge a one-way fee, you’ll notice that the rate increases significantly.
Codes can’t reduce one-way rates – We’ve experimented with all of the codes and none of them are able to provide discounts on one-ways.
Peculiar Things With Europcar Codes
There are a couple of scenarios that noticed with the codes that we’d thought we’d share:
- Not valid in all locations – Europcar coupon codes are not always valid in every location. In some cases, you might enter a code and see no change at all in the price.
For example, a code that worked at Marseille Provence Airport did not work at SeaTac Airport or Frankfurt International Airport.
- Discounts not always consistent across locations – Even when a code does apply, the discount may not be exactly as advertised.
For instance, using a 20% discount code on a Seattle booking only reduced the rate by 15%, even though the system confirmed that 20% had been applied.
Underage Drivers
Europcar’s age rules vary by country and by vehicle type, but there are some general guidelines to know before booking.
In most countries, you must be at least 21 years old and have held a valid driver’s license for at least one year.
However, the minimum age can be lower or higher depending on the country, and younger drivers often face a “young driver surcharge.” This is an extra fee added to your rental if you fall below a certain age threshold.
Here are a few examples:
France / Belgium / Germany | 19 years old | Drivers under 26 will be charged the young driver surcharge | 1 year |
Italy | 25 years old | Minimum age can range from 18 to 24 with a young driver surcharge, depending on vehicle category | N/A |
Portugal | 21 years old | Drivers between 19 and 22 will be charged the young driver surcharge | 1 year |
Spain | 21 years old | Drivers under 25 will be charged the young driver surcharge | 1 year |
UK | 22 to 75 years old | Drivers between 22 and 26 will be charged the young driver surcharge | 1 year (except in specific locations where 2 years are required) |
What if you are younger than the stated minimum? In most cases, you will not be able to rent from Europcar unless you meet the minimum age and license requirements for that country. Some locations may allow younger drivers if they pay the surcharge and the vehicle category permits it, but this is not guaranteed and must be checked before booking.
How do you make an underage booking? Europcar makes it easier for younger drivers to rent compared to some other companies, but there are still a few things you should know before booking. If you are 26 or younger, a Young Driver Surcharge may apply depending on the country and the vehicle category.
For online bookings, it will also appear automatically if you log in with your Europcar driver ID. You will see the full amount added as an extra before you check out, so there is no guesswork about the fee.
The process itself is straightforward. You can book online or through the Europcar app without filling out extra forms. You only need a valid driver’s license, a basic insurance package, and the ability to pay the surcharge if it applies.
Once you meet those requirements, you can rent almost any vehicle from compact cars and hybrids to vans and luxury sedans without the heavy restrictions that some competitors impose on younger drivers.
Are there any codes that waive the Young Renter Fee? No. Europcar does not offer promo codes that remove this fee. If you are under 26, the surcharge is applied automatically in locations where it is required.
If you are a younger driver, Europcar is one of the more flexible rental options, but you still need to check the specific rules for your pickup location. Knowing the surcharge in advance can help you avoid surprise costs when you collect your car.
Europcar’s Privilege For You Loyalty Program
Like all other car rental companies, Europcar also has its own loyalty program. They call it Privilege For You.
Earning Points
To earn Privilege For You points, it is pretty simple:
- Earn 1 point per €1 spent
Membership Tiers
This loyalty program has several tiers that break down to the following and provide the following benefits:

Glaring Problem With This Program
Currently, this program is only valid for the following countries: United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Belgium, Luxembourg, Australia, New Zealand, Austria, and Switzerland.
Rentals outside these locations do not earn points or allow Benefit or Reward usage.
There are also a bunch of non-affiliated Europcar rental locations in France, some where they’re excluded entirely and others where you can earn points but can’t receive benefit or use reward.
How To Join Privilege For You
Joining is pretty easy. You simply start at this Privilege For You page and you’ll get access to it pretty much instantly.
Contrary to what’s detailed in the FAQ, it doesn’t matter where you are located. Anyone can join the loyalty program.
How To Redeem Privilege For You Points
The Privilege For You loyalty program works different from other point-based systems. You don’t convert/redeem the points to some sort of benefit.
Instead, as you accumulate points, you’ll reach point milestones. At each of these milestones, you’ll automatically get an e-mail from Europcar that provides a “surprise benefit”.
They don’t share upfront what the possible “surprise benefit” can be but I imagine they could range from terrible to possibly a free day rental.
What I don’t love about this is that the surprise benefit has to be applied within 90 days, otherwise you forfeit it.
Status Matching
A hidden feature of the program is that if you currently hold a higher loyalty tier with another car rental company, you can contact the support team to have your status matched.
There’s no formal process other than reaching out on their contact page.
Earning Other Loyalty Points With Europcar
Europcar has partnerships with several Frequent Flyer Programs offered by airlines, hotels, and other travel or transport services.
This means that when you make a booking, you can select one of these programs to accrue points.
We’ve already broken the details down in the table under Partners of Europcar discounts so make sure you take a look at that again.
It’s also not clear whether if you earn points with a frequent flyer-type program, are you still eligible to earn Privilege For You points.
All we’ve had to go on is what’s on the Partners of Europcar page.
Car Rental Tips At Europcar
Beyond coupon codes and promo codes, there are actually a number of tricks that I usually keep in mind. These alone will save you lots of money with Europcar.
Now imagine if you combined all of these together, imagine the savings!
- Book early – To get the best prices, we have seen first-hand that by booking several months in advance, you can get the best prices on Europcar.
- Sign up for Privilege For You – Compared to other car rental companies, this is probably lower in priority since the benefits aren’t the most clear but since it’s free to sign up, this is easy.
- Don’t rent from the airport if you can – With Europcar, we’ve noticed that in many locations, the airport surcharge is included in the rate. It’s not clear whether that means the basic rate increases as a result but as a general rule of thumb, airport rentals are usually more.
- Week rentals sometimes cheaper than 5 or 6 days – Discounts often kick in when you hit a full week so if you’re close to that, try getting a quote for 7 days.
- Use credit card for car rental insurance – Instead of purchasing insurance, leverage your credit card for insurance. Make sure you read your policy beforehand to know what and how you’re covered. The best Canadian credit cards have insurance built in which means you don’t need to pay for additional car rental insurance.
- Prepaying fuel is never a good idea – Don’t be tempted by the prepaid fuel option. We’ve only ever done it if we know that we’ll be on a tight schedule when returning the vehicle. It’s not worth it because it’s a higher fuel rate than if you were to go to a gas station.
What You Need To Know About Europcar
Branding
Europcar is a French company that got its start in 1949. Their head quarters are still in France and today, they have a presence in 140 countries. They can primarily be found in Europe, North America, Western Asia, and Africa.
As one of the leading car hire companies in Europe, they’ve evolved over the years, now offering electric vehicles, car-sharing programs, and subscription models.
Another sub-brand they have is Keddy by Europcar. They are considered to be focused on leisure rental which simply means that they’re even more budget compared to the parent brand.
That said, they’ve always lagged the other big players such as Avis, Enterprise, National, and Hertz.
Prices
While not necessarily having as big of a brand as some of the others, what we’ve personally experienced with Europcar is that the consistently are able to offer low rental rates even without the use of coupons.
While car rental coupon codes exist for Europcar, you can tell even from our list that it’s not as core to their business model.
In that way, we’ve always appreciated their transparency and budget-friendliness.
Don’t forget parking at the airport

Something that’s easy to forget in trip planning is how you’re going to get to the airport and if you’re driving your own car, where you’re going to leave it behind.
That’s where booking platforms like Airport Parking Reservations and Park Sleep Fly come into play. Whether you need to get a hotel package that includes parking or just parking itself, they have you covered.
Use the code AWESOME7 to save up to $7 off of your booking.
Locations

When you look at their name, you’d think that their focus is primarily on Europe. To that end, they are, but when look at their 1872 Europcar locations, they cover way more than you think they do.
With the map above, it probably makes sense to look at where they don’t have great coverage:
- Canada – They do have a few locations but overall weak coverage.
- Japan
- South Korea
- China
For our last Europcar experience, we rented at El Loa Airport (CJC) in Calama, as part of our 6 days in the Atacama Desert itinerary. We were pretty happy with the rate and the pick up/drop off was pretty seamless.
Reviews of Europcar
Here are two contrasting perspectives that we wanted to share as I know that Europcar can sometimes get a bad reputation.
Europcar Sint Maarten Reviews

If you search online, you’ll see there are all sorts of “never again!” type of reviews.
We have mixed feelings about looking at TripAdvisor reviews for car rental companies because the only people that leave a review are the ones that are pissed off about something.
That said, often times, the negative reviews are a reflection of the location itself and not necessarily the company.
From the above, it sounds like this particular location has been over-charging customers and poor customer service.
Our advice is to check the reviews if there are any available and if there’s a really bad trend of malpractice, it might be better to avoid them. Otherwise, we don’t have any issue with recommending Europcar.
PRO TIP: Always take a photo of the fuel gauge when you return the car so you have evidence that you returned it with a full tank. Also make sure to take photos of the exterior of the car from all angles before you leave and also after you return the car.
Our Experiences with Europcar

We’ve rented from Europcar 3 times and while it’s not an enormous amount, this is what we always came away with:
- The prices were really good and we weren’t even using any coupons.
- Check-in and return process was always really easy.
- Never had any customer service issues or erroneous charges.
The three trips we used Europcar on were:
- Exploring Southern Ireland in 7 days – I distinctly remember on this trip how the lady checking us in was so surprised at the cheap rate we were able to get.
- Our 4 days in Cape Town, South Africa
- 6 days in the Atacama Desert with some of the craziest roads
When planning our trips, since Europcar doesn’t always show up on all the search engines, we’ll check them manually. Their prices will surprise you!

Travel Resources For Your Next Trip
If you’re in the process of planning your trip and putting together your itinerary, these are genuinely the best resources that the Going Awesome Places team stands by 100%.
Credit Cards
Don’t get burned by hidden fees on top of terrible exchange rates. When we travel now, we use the Wise Card. Simply load it with the currency you need before you go and use it as a regular VISA or their digital wallet card. Use their free app to track how much you have and top up when you need to.
Flights
In our opinion, of all the booking search engines, Skyscanner is the most helpful and easy to use thanks to their Everywhere feature. Kayak is also another that’s we will often check.
Rideshare
You probably already have accounts but if you don’t, for new Lyft users, use code WILLIAM4825 to get 50% off your first 2 rides (max $10 USD per ride). Offer valid for 14 days after you take your first ride. For new Uber users, use code psuqbjg4d7rn for the same offer except it’s valid for 30 days.
eSIM
eSIM: Lately, we’ve really loved using eSIMs. We’ve tested several over the years and we have access to a few special promotions.
- AmigoSIM – Use GOINGAWESOMEPLACES to save 25% off. Code is re-useable.
- Gigsky – Use TANG149 to get $3 USD when you sign up, then use code GOINGAWESOME to save 20% on all eSIM orders.
- Airalo – Use referral code WILLIA9500 to get $3 USD credit on your first purchase.
- KnowRoaming – Use code GAP10 to save 10%.
- AloSIM – Use code GOINGAWESOMEPLACES to save 15%.
- Ubigi – AWESOME10 to save 10% on your first order.
- Holafly – Use code GOINGAWESOMEPLACES to save 5%.
Wifi Hotspot
We’ve been a huge fan of wifi hotspot devices such as PokeFi (use code GAP24300) because their rates are are hard to beat and it works globally. Solis is another that we recommend. Pros are that you can share the wifi with your whole group but cons are that you have to invest in a device and you have to charge it every night.
Hotels
Our go-to is Booking.com because they have the best inventory of properties including hotels and B&Bs plus they have their Genius tier discounts. Expedia is also worth using especially with their One Key rewards program which is basically like cash. The exception is Asia where Agoda always has the best prices. Always do a quick check on TripAdvisor as well.
Tours and Activities
When planning our trips, we always check both Viator and GetYourGuide to at least see what’s out there in the destination that we’re going to. They often have different offerings and prices so check both.
Travel Insurance
Learn how to buy the best travel insurance for you. This isn’t something you want to travel without.
- HeyMondo – Popular insurance provider for frequent travelers and comes with great coverage and special perks. By booking through our link to get a 5% discount!
- RATESDOTCA – Search engine Canadians looking for the cheapest insurance including multi-trip annual policies.
- SafetyWing – A perfect fit for long-term nomads.
