I have been looking for a good pair of sandals for a while. Run of the mill sandals never last with all my camping, dog walks, wild swimming and working in the garden etc. I just don’t get on with flimsy sandals.
When I look for sandals I want something that is really sturdy, comfortable, safe, hard wearing and lightweight. Hard to come by. But when I got the chance to try the KEEN Hyperport H2 Sandals I realised I had found something that fits the bill.
These sandals are immediately comfortable, made not just for leisure but also for adventures and for winding down after adventures. Perfect for adventures near water as the grip is fabulous.
Practical, really comfortable and look great as well. Lets’ take a closer look.
Design
These sandals are not at the flip-flop end of things but more nearer the shoe side of things. Designed to be protective yet breatable and usable as a sandal.
First to the cushioning sole. The way it keeps the sandal so lightweight yet has super cushioning that really does protect the bottom of your feet when clambering over rocks or in stoney shallow water. In my testing I hardly felt anything it actually felt more like a good pair of trainers underneath, but with good grip though.
The solid sole material extends out the sides and over the toes for extra protection on outdoor adventures. I don’t know about you but I value my toes and there are many times I wanted light sandal comfort but not having to worry about really hurting my toe.
The material of the uppers is a type of polyester that is very washable, light and sturdy. There are little things that Keen have certainly thought about. Like the heel allows you to step on them and shuffle about heel-less and they stretch out so easily so you can pop them all properly and head out.
To tighten they have a pull cord elastic bungee drawcord. Does the job superbly and I haven’t seen any sign of wear or tear on them yet. So easy to make as snug or loose as you want the fit to be for the moment.
Grip
The grip on these sandals are great for me. I have tried them scrambling over wet rock when wild swimming plus over wet limestone when it is wet, which is notorious for slippiness.
The bottom of the soles utilises Keen’s aquagrip rubber traction. Without adding weight it allows you to confidently stride over wet rocky surfaces.
If you are in a really muddy situation then although you can slide you can bet that you should not be wearing sandals type footwear in that case.
Fit
Just like I found with the Keen Targhee hiking boots, Keen have the widest fit of any footwear I have used. Great for me and for anyone that like room for your feet or if you have wider than normal feet.
If you have extra narrow feet then there may be too much room so try them on in that case first.
Front to back the sizing is perfect and confortable, especially with the bungee tightener and elastic slip on heel. I am usually a UK size 8 and Keen sizings I am finding do fit to what I normally am.
Testing In The Wild
I have been using these sandlas now for a couple of months in all kinds of places and conditions.
Around the campsites, around the garden, when clambering rocks in the heat and wild swimming. They have become much more than that and come into use where normally I would have to switch to shoes.
Dog walks, even long cross country dogs walks they are great. Short hikes over flatter ground. In fact they have become my go to shoe/sandal when not on hikes requiring boots. That is how comfortable and sturdy they are.
Conclusion
OK, it took me a while to find the right kind of sandal I wanted but now I think I have found them. A sandal/shoe for all accosions. My trainers have become a lot more dormant since getting them. Plus my feet are very thankful they get a lot more chance to breathe.
They have lasted and are as good as new after a lot of wear outdoors in the last couple of months and I can tell they will last a whole long time ahead.
I enjoy them so much I want another pair in a different colour. Yes I highly recommend the Keen Hyperport H2 Sandals if you want an amazing all round and protective outdoor sandal.
