Figuring out where to stay in Iceland was one of the trickiest parts of planning our trips there. It’s not like most European countries where you can rock up to a town and find a dozen hotels to choose from. Outside Reykjavik, accommodation is limited, it books up fast, and it’s not cheap. We’ve visited Iceland multiple times, including spending four weeks driving the entire Ring Road, and we’ve stayed in everything from smart city hotels to tiny guesthouses in the middle of nowhere. Between us, we’ve slept in over twenty different properties across every region of Iceland, from Reykjavik to the Westfjords. The short answer, if you only have a few days: base yourself in Reykjavik and take day trips. If you have a week or more, move every night or two along the Ring Road and book the southeast section first, because that’s where the beds run out soonest.
