During the month of May you may have seen us walking lots, yes lots of miles in the glorious county of Yorkshire.
However on this occasion the miles were a lot more meaningful. I was walking 100 miles in 17 walks in aid of Yorkshire Cancer Research. #The WeWalkForYorkshire Campaign.
A campaign I have more than gladly got involved with in the past and was ready to step up with the steps yet again. Even the dogs joined in.
At the end of this article you will find the link to sponsor us still. Thanks so much for all who have donated so far.
Who Are Yorkshire Cancer Research?
Yorkshire Cancer Research is a vital charity dedicated to tackling the devastating impact of cancer within the Yorkshire region. With a mission to ensure people in Yorkshire live longer, healthier lives free of cancer, they take action today to prevent, diagnose, and treat cancer more effectively.
Yorkshire Cancer Research primarily funds its work through the generosity of its supporters. They invest in world-leading research, pioneer new treatments, and bring vital clinical trials directly to the people of Yorkshire. By focusing on regional needs, they ensure that the funds raised within Yorkshire are used to improve the lives of those living there.
In essence, Yorkshire Cancer Research is a driving force in the fight against cancer in the region, bringing together world-class research, innovative services, and community engagement to create a healthier future for everyone in Yorkshire.
Why 100 Miles In 17 Walks
Yorkshire Cancer Research was founded in 1925. That means that this year is the 100th anniversary for this great charity.
The other figure is a lot more sobering and I wanted to point it out with a challenge number. Did you know that on average, every 17 minutes, someobody in Yorkshire is diagnosed with cancer. That is a crazy statistic and makes the area one of the worst hit but also a reason that the work that this charity does is so important.
Not just for Yorkshire but their work and research goes on to affect the whole of the UK and the world.
The Walks
I didn’t want to just walk miles in any old place just for the sake of it. As well as the alarming cancer rates it does have some of the best outdoor walking spaces in the country. I have spent so much time in this vast county over the years, walking the moors and dales.
I wanted the miles for the charity to be meaningful and really connected to the county so throughout the month I tried to cover the varying parts of it. As well as some lesser known walks that I admire.
The biggest walk and stretch of miles came in the middle of the month in the form of doing the Yorkshire 3 Peaks again.
Elsewhere in the glorious Yorkshure Dales I walked miles in places like Malham Cove and Bolton Abbey.
In the west and south I walked the Huddersfield Canal and the hills around it. The moors around Haworth were wild and windy plus some old favourite reservoir walks took me to waterway filled miles.
The finishing stretch took me towards the County of Yorkshire’s capital, York via wondrous places like Sutton Bank and Castle Howard. Finishing with a march to the capital centre to the centre.
I may love walks but the thought of doing all these extra walks and miles within a timeframe made me think of what I was doing and all the 100s of other people taking part in #WeWalkForYorkshire.
Plus importantly what the charity volunteers, researchers and, in fact, what everyone does to help this charity keep going and researching.
Thank you – Fundraising
As I was walking and travelling around Yorkshire it was really heartening to see the engagement from so many people. From ths directly affected by cancer to those around the UK and the world that have seen what Yorkshire Cancer Research ar doing. It is really appreciated.
