Air France KLM Flying Blue Adds SAS as New Partner

With the dust barely settled on SAS’s departure from Star Alliance, there’s already some movement when it comes to the airline’s new membership with SkyTeam.

While an official press release hasn’t been sent out, information about earning Flying Blue miles on SAS flights has been published on the Flying Blue website, and SAS flights have also been loaded into the Flying Blue search engine for redemptions (as we’ll discuss below).

When it comes to earning Flying Blue miles on SAS flights, you can get up to 200% miles on SAS flights, based on the length of the actual distance flown and the fare class. The full breakdown of the SAS earning scheme is as follows for medium-haul and domestic Flights:

Redeeming Flying Blue Miles for SAS

Aside from being able to earn Flying Blue miles on SAS flights, it’s now possible to redeem miles for them, too.

As of September 4, 2024, SAS flights are bookable with Air France KLM Flying Blue miles with rates for transatlantic flights starting at 21,300 miles in economy or 40,900 miles in business class.

Here’s a look at sample pricing from Chicago to Copenhagen:

Fortunately, there’s also minimal taxes and fees on these redemptions, with just $43.70 (CAD) for a one-way flight in business class from Chicago to Copenhagen.

While the award availability is relatively sparse, these are very favourable award prices so if you can find some, it’s an excellent way to fly to or through Scandinavia.

As a reminder, SAS offers flights to the following cities in North America:

  • San Francisco (SFO)
  • Los Angeles (LAX)
  • Chicago (ORD)
  • Toronto (YYZ)
  • Boston (BOS)
  • New York (JFK)
  • Newark (EWR)
  • Washington DC (IAD)
  • Atlanta (ATL)
  • Miami (MIA)

If you have plans to fly to or through Scandinavia in the next year, be sure to keep an eye out for SAS award availability through Flying Blue.

As a reminder, in Canada you can earn Flying Blue miles directly on the Air France KLM World Elite Mastercard®, or by converting American Express Membership Rewards points at a 1:0.75 rate.

In the United States, Flying Blue is a transfer partner with American Express US Membership Rewards, Bilt Rewards, Capital One Miles, Chase Ultimate Rewards, and Citi ThankYou Rewards at a 1:1 rate.
