If you’ve had your eye on the American Express Business Edge Card, you’ll want to act quickly, as it appears that it’s about to imminently become closed to new applications.

As per conversations with American Express on the online chat function and the call centre, the last day to apply for the card is today, August 26, 2024.

Last Call for the American Express Business Edge Card

It appears that Canada is about to lose another option for those in search of a new credit card, as the American Express Business Edge Card will be closed to applications in the very near future.

If you apply for the card via a referral link, you’ll notice a blurb that mentions “To be eligible for this offer, you must apply by August 26, 2024, through the link provided on this page. This Card will no longer be part of our referral program after this date.”

There isn’t any other publicly available information about the timeline; however, we spoke with American Express representatives on the online chat function and through the call centre. The agents confirmed that the card is being closed to applications through referral and public channels, and that as of August 27, 2024, it will no longer be open to applications.

Existing cardholders will continue to enjoy the card’s benefits and features indefinitely.

Given that the deadline is fast approaching, if you’ve had your eye on the American Express Business Edge Card, you may want to act very quickly to take advantage of the current offer.

As a reminder, if you apply through a referral link, the welcome bonus for the card is for up to 77,000 Membership Rewards points, structured as follows:

  • 55,000 MR points upon spending $5,000 in the first three months
  • 10x MR points on business essentials for the first six months, up to 10,000 MR points
  • 1,000 MR points for each of the first 12 months in which you spend $3,000

American Express Business Edge Card

  • Earn 45,000 55,000 MR points upon spending $5,000 in the first three months
  • Plus, earn an additional 1,000 MR points for each of the first 12 months in which you spend $3,000, for an additional 12,000 MR points
  • Also, earn 3x 10x MR points on food and drinks, ridesharing, gas, office equipment, and electronics, up to an additional 10,000 MR points
  • Transfer MR points to Aeroplan, Avios, or Marriott Bonvoy
  • Enjoy the exclusive benefits of being an American Express cardholder
  • Bonus MR points for referring family and friends
  • Annual fee: $99

The card’s annual fee is just $99, and even if you don’t fulfill all of the monthly minimum spending requirements to earn the full swath of 77,000 points, you can get a nice boost of at least 55,000 points with the first part of the welcome bonus alone.

Plus, you’ll get 10x Membership Rewards points for the first six months (up to 10,000 MR points or $1,000 spent) on business essentials, which includes office supplies, electronics, rides & gas, and eats & drinks (including food delivery services, excluding groceries).

As a reminder, the American Express Business Edge Card is a great card to use for gas purchases, since it offers a strong return of 3 MR points per dollar spent (or more with the 10x points for the first six months on business essentials, which includes gas).

Conclusion

After making its debut nearly five years ago, it appears that the American Express Business Edge Card is about to become closed off to new applications.
