How to Plan a Trip to Greece

Understanding Greece

Greece, officially known as the Hellenic Republic, is located in the southern Mediterranean between Italy and Turkey. With its 227 inhabited islands and a land area of 132,000 square kilometers, Greece offers a diverse range of landscapes and experiences that enchants its visitors to keep them returning for years to come.

From the historic city of Athens to the picturesque islands, Greece is a treasure trove of ancient history, stunning beaches, and breathtaking natural beauty. With a population of just under 11 million people, Greece is known for its warm hospitality (seriously, Greek people are so friendly), delicious cuisine, and vibrant culture.

Greece Travel Itinerary

There are endless amounts of options on how to spend your time exploring Greece, but I would definitely recommend an island hopping tour that begins and ends in two different islands with airports (to maximize your time there).

Some of my favorite places include

  • Athens
  • Ios
  • Santorini
  • Mykonos
  • Crete
  • Naxos
  • Rhodes
  • Corfu

It really just depends on how long you’ll have in the country and how much you’d like to squeeze in. I’d also recommend reading my guide to the Best Greek Islands To Visit for more information on all these places!

Preparing for Your Greek Adventure

Before embarking on your Greek adventure, there are a few essential things to consider.

Essential Documents: Visas and Sim Cards

When planning a trip to Greece, it is important to ensure that you have all the necessary documents in order. If you are a resident of one of the 26 countries that have signed the Schengen Agreement, you do not require a visa to enter Greece. While a lot of countries are granted a visa on arrival, it is always a good idea to check the official government website for the latest information on visa requirements.

Additionally, consider obtaining a Greek SIM card for your mobile phone to stay connected during your trip. This will allow you to make calls, use data, and access the internet without incurring high roaming charges. My recommended SIM Card for traveling around Europe is Airalo. I’ve used them many times traveling around Europe and love their user friendly system and how quick you can be connected when you land.

Packing Essentials for Greece

When packing for Greece, consider the Mediterranean climate and pack lightweight clothing suitable for warm weather. Don’t forget to bring comfortable shoes for exploring archaeological sites like the Acropolis or the ancient sites of Delphi. Essential items include sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses.

It’s also advisable to pack a travel adapter, as well as a power bank for your electronic devices. If you plan on visiting the Greek islands or taking a sailing excursion, pack swimwear and a beach towel. Lastly, remember your travel documents, including your passport and visa if required, and a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated while enjoying all that Greece has to offer.

Best Time of the Year to Visit Greece

When planning a vacation to Greece, timing is essential to make the most of your trip. Depending on your preferences, the ideal time to visit Greece can vary. The Mediterranean climate blesses Greece with warm summers and mild winters, making it a year-round destination. For those interested in exploring archaeological sites and enjoying outdoor activities, the best time is from April to October. However, if you want to avoid crowds and experience Greece at a quieter pace, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons in spring and autumn.

Greece is one of my recommended places to visit in October in Europe because you’ll still be amazed by the sights, food, and culture – but will save a ton of money and enjoy fewer crowds.

Crete

The summer months of June, July, and August are the peak tourist season, with hot temperatures and bustling islands. This is the perfect time for beach lovers and those looking to experience the vibrant nightlife of popular destinations like Mykonos and Santorini. If you prefer milder weather and fewer crowds, consider visiting in the shoulder seasons of May, September, and October. During these months, the weather is still pleasant for outdoor activities, and you can enjoy the Greek islands without the summer crowds. For those interested in a sailing excursion, the summer months offer the best conditions with calm seas and warm temperatures.

Music Festivals in Greece and events worth witnessing

One of the most famous events is the Athens Epidaurus Festival, celebrating music, theater, and dance in iconic ancient venues.

For a taste of Greek island culture, head to the International Music Festival of Patmos, known for its exceptional concerts in stunning surroundings. If you happen to visit in July, don’t miss the Kalamata International Dance Festival, offering a vibrant display of contemporary dance performances.

Exploring Greek Cuisine

Greek cuisine is influenced by the country’s geographical location and its long history. The Mediterranean climate provides an abundance of fresh produce, including olives, tomatoes, herbs, and citrus fruits. Seafood also plays a prominent role in Greek cuisine, thanks to the country’s extensive coastline.

Some must-try dishes include moussaka, a layered casserole with eggplant, ground meat, and béchamel sauce; souvlaki, grilled skewers of meat or vegetables; and spanakopita, a savory pastry filled with spinach and feta cheese. Don’t forget to try tzatziki, a refreshing yogurt and cucumber dip, and dolmades, stuffed grape leaves.
