I’ve been visiting Rome since I was 15, and Jess and I have taken every one of the nine day trips in this guide ourselves, from the ruins of Pompeii to a plate of truffle pasta in Civita di Bagnoregio. There are dozens of places you could reach from Rome in a day. Nine of them, in our view, are worth doing as a day trip, and a few of the famous ones are not. The reason we’re opinionated about this is simple. A day trip from Rome costs more than the train fare. It costs a day in Rome, and if you have four or five days in the city, that’s a quarter of your trip. So a day trip has to beat the Colosseum, the Vatican and a really good plate of cacio e pepe to deserve its slot. If you just want the short answer, here it is. Pompeii is the best day trip from Rome if you’re up for a long day, Ostia Antica is the best one if you’re not, and Civita di Bagnoregio is the one whose photos you’ll still be looking at in ten years.
