The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card (see rates and fees) is among the best travel rewards cards for beginners. It hits on all fronts: lucrative earning rates, valuable perks and versatile rewards — all for an affordable $95 annual fee.
According to our August 2025 valuations, Chase Ultimate Rewards points are some of the most valuable transferable points out there.
Let's dive into why you should consider adding the card to your wallet.
Chase Sapphire Preferred current offer
New Sapphire Preferred cardholders can earn 75,000 bonus points after spending $5,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.
According to our valuations, this offer is worth $1,538.
The current welcome offer is the standard one we typically see on the card. The last time we saw an elevated offer was from April-May 2025, which was for 100,000 points (no longer available).
If you've been considering getting this card, now is still a good time to apply since transferable rewards are so valuable.

Why you should apply for the Chase Sapphire Preferred
The Sapphire Preferred is well worth opening — and keeping beyond the first year, partly because it is easy to rack up points after you've spent the welcome bonus.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred has many generous bonus-earning categories:
- 5 points per dollar spent on travel booked through Chase Travel℠
- 5 points per dollar spent on Lyft (through September 30, 2027)
- 3 points per dollar spent on dining
- 3 points per dollar spent on select streaming services
- 3 points per dollar spent on online groceries (excluding Target, Walmart and wholesale clubs)
- 2 points per dollar spent on all other travel purchases
- 1 point per dollar spent on all other purchases
An up to $50 annual hotel statement credit brings the effective annual fee down to a manageable $45.
Cardholders also receive a 10% annual point bonus based on their total spend during the account anniversary year at a rate of 1 point for each $1 spent. So, if you spend $20,000 on the card in a year, you'll get 2,000 extra points at the end of it.
Additionally, Chase Ultimate Rewards can transfer to 11 airline and three hotel partners, including valuable programs such as Air Canada Aeroplan, Air France-KLM Flying Blue and World of Hyatt. You can maximize your rewards by booking aspirational business-class tickets or picturesque stays at island resorts for far less than their cash equivalent.
