How To Find The Lowest Rates At Choice Hotels

1 – Pay now and save

example of choice hotels booking directly rates

These days, hotels want you to pay their non-refundable rate because it locks you in. As a result, hotel chains like Choice Hotels are willing to lower their prices with their Pay Now and Save rate.

Even if you don’t want to pay in advance, their Everyday Rate is also quite competitive. Of course, you can get a get an even better price if you are Choice Privileges member.

When comparing these rates with other platforms such as Expedia and Booking.com, we’ve have found that Choice Hotels always has better rates on their website. This makes sense because they really try to avoid being beat by competitors (see price matching below).

Also, it’s worth noting that you can only earn Choice Privileges points if you book directly with them.

2 – Stay multiple times

A common offer that Choice Hotels runs is their, “Stay 2X, Get a Gift Card” promotion. By staying twice, you get a Choice Hotels gift card which you can use at specific retailers.

To be eligible for this, you need to:

  • Sign up (free) to be part of the Choice Privileges Program.
  • Register for the promotion from the Deals page.
  • Complete two stays at participating hotels in the US and Canada.
  • Receive a gift card.

PRO TIP: This promotion is based on stays which are blocks of continuous nights. If you’re willing to move around, you can stay 1 night at one hotel, and another night at another hotel, to collect gift cards quickly.

In the US, you can select a gift card that can be used at Amazon, Applebee’s, Fandango, Mastercard, Shell, or Walmart.

In Canada, you can select a gift card that can be used at Bass Pro Shops, Canadian Tire, Esso, Sobeys, The Key, or Walmart.

This promotion isn’t always around but comes back around a few times a year.

There’s also another interesting promotion called Extra Rewards. This is based on completing weeknight stays. Before your stay, you can choose whether you want a gift card, Uber discount, points (US only), or airline miles. Again, they want to encourage you to stay multiple times.

Currently, you can also double your Extras benefit by staying at a Cambria, Ascend, Radisson, Radisson RED or Radisson Blu property on weeknights through 12/31/24.

3 – Choice Privileges

choice hotels member price

This is the no-brainer way to save money with Choice Hotels. The “Member Price” is always cheaper and you can still choose between the refundable and non-refundable price.

Best of all, being a Choice Privileges member is free so just sign up now.

By being a member of the Choice Privileges program, you also get the following benefits:

  • Elite status offer point bonuses for stays (Gold – 10%, Platinum – 25%, Diamond – 50%).
  • Welcome gift
  • Elite reserved parking
  • Elite customer hotline
  • Elite rollover nights
  • Early check-in and late checkout
  • Room upgrades

As a Diamond member, you also get access to guaranteed room availability and free breakfast for 2.

Choices Hotel doesn’t publish an award chart since they don’t have categories. In general, award nights range between 8,000 to 35,000 points. Also, you can only book a room on points within a short 100 day window. Cash and points is also available.

While there aren’t any categories, they do have a higher class of properties called Preferred Hotels & Resorts. These typically cost anywhere between 20,000 an 87,000 points.

In addition to hotels, you can also redeem points for special experiences, gift cards, cruise credit, and you can convert them to airline miles.

Lastly, there’s also the option to earn airline miles instead of Choice Privileges points (10 points per dollar). The details are found on the airline miles page. If you decide to do this, you’re not eligible for (weeknight) Extras.

  • United MileagePlus – 250 miles per stay.
  • Free Spirit Rewards – 250 miles per stay.
  • AeroMexico Club Premier – 400 miles per stay.
  • Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan – 250 miles per stay.
  • Qantas Frequent Flyer – 3 points per AUD for stays in Australia or 600 points per stay in New Zealand, Singapore, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, and all other countries.

Choice Hotels has a few recurring promotions throughout the year:

  • Stay 2 nights and earn 2,000 points, stay 3+ nights and earn 5,000 points

Similar to other hotel brands, Best Western also has discounts for various memberships and groups.

  • AAA or CAA – CAA members can save up to 10%. On top of that, you also automatically get Gold Elite status.
  • AARP or CARP – AARP members can save up to 10% off (sometimes this can go up to 15%) hotel stays around the world. CARP members can save up to 10% off hotels across Canada for guests over the age of 60.
  • Military and Government (US or Canada) – If you a military service member or work for the government, you are eligible for an undisclosed discount and free breakfast (Canada only). ID required. In the US, if you’re an active duty or reserve military member, retired military, National Guard or U.S. Coast Guard member, you’re eligible for Gold Elite status.

6 – Choice Hotels corporate codes

You may work for a company that has access to special corporate rates with Choice Hotels.

All corporate rates have free cancellation 24 hours prior to 4:00 PM local hotel time. These are eligible for Choice Privilege points and status.

As an employee, make sure you know whether you’re allowed to use this for business (corporate travelers) or leisure travel.

PRO TIP: For simplicity, after clicking on “Check Prices”, the code is applied already but in addition, the code will also be copied to your computer or smartphone’s clipboard so you can paste it in.

How to enter an Choice Hotels corporate code

choice hotels corporate code field entry area

If you are eligible to use one of the Choice Hotels corporate codes above, it is quite straightforward to enter the code when booking your room.

From the homepage, look for the “Special Rate” drop down. Go all the way to the very bottom and paste your code or ID and click on “Apply”.

choice hotels search result page with corporate code applied

On the search result page, you’ll see the corporate code applied. This discount persists throughout your session which means that you won’t need to apply it every time. Also, notice that the name of the company shows up here.

In the dropdown, there may be multiple options. The default-selected one is normally the best one but if you received instructions from your company to choose a different one, pick that one.

Does Choice Hotels check for ID?

In order to be eligible to use a Choice Hotels corporate code, you need to be an employee of the company. As a result, it’s possible that the front desk at check-in may ask for your ID.

Acceptable forms of identification are:

  • Badge or pass with the company name and picture.
  • Business card that includes your name and company.
  • Email (printed or on the phone) showing your e-mail address with the company name.

Are corporate rates actually cheaper?

comparing choice hotels corporate code rates and member price

If you’re looking for the absolute cheapest prices corporate rates aren’t always the lowest price. In the example above, you’ll see that the Pay Now and Save rate for members is the winner.

Of course, you have to consider the fact that the cheapest rate is non-refundable whereas the corporate rate comes with free cancellation.

The lesson here is that you should always compare prices against the publicly available prices.

Can you earn Choice Privileges points with corporate codes?

Yes, you are eligible to earn Choice Privileges points by using a corporate code.

However, if you are a Choice Hotels employee or using a friends, family and associate discount code, you won’t be eligible to earn points.

7 – Price matching

The ultimate travel hacker will compare rates across multiple sites to see if there’s a way that they can snag some extra money. Here’s how the price matching process work.

With Choice Hotels, they call it “Best Price Guarantee” or “Lowest Price Guarantee”, all you have to do is find a lower, publicly available rate online and they’ll match it. Additionally, if you’re from Canada or the US, you’ll get a $50 prepaid credit card. If you’re outside of Canada/US, you’ll receive your first night free.

This is extremely interesting in a few ways:

  • The $50 Reward Card is the same amount whether in USD or CAD but it is a credit card and not a Choice Hotels gift card so it’s pretty close to receiving cash.
  • More interesting is if you’re from a country outside of US and Canada where you’ll get a first night free. There’s no cap to this so this could give you significant savings.

This means comparing it with a number of sites such as:

The main condition of price matching is this:

  • Only applies to Comfort Inn, Comfort Suites, Quality, Clarion, Cambria Hotels, Ascend Hotel Collection, Sleep Inn, MainStay Suites, Suburban Extended Stay, Econo Lodge and Rodeway Inn brand hotels worldwide. It does not apply to reservations made at WoodSprings Suites or Ascend Hotel Collection properties in Las Vegas.
  • The cheaper rate must be found on a website available to be booked by the general public within 24 hours of booking your hotel room.
  • Your booking must be at least 48 hours prior to 6PM arrival on the first day.
  • The lower rate has to be for the exact same criteria in terms of the hotel, room type, dates of stay, guest occupancy, and currency.
  • The different in rates must be at least $1 or 1% lower, whichever is greater.
  • The competitor rate can’t be behind a password or login.
  • Reservations booked within 48 hours of the hotel’s earliest published check-in time on the arrival date of the claim aren’t eligible.
  • This only applies to Best Available Rate, Advance Purchase, Choice Privileges membership, Choice Promotions, AAA, and Senior/AARP rates.
  • The rate cannot also be what shows up on Google, Bing, Kayak, Trivago, or TripAdvisor. They have to be on real booking platform and not an aggregator.

After you fill out the claim form, a service representative will contact you within 48 hours to confirm that it meets the criteria. After you complete your stay, you’ll receive your prepaid card within 6 weeks or you’ll receive the first night free.

PRO TIP: You want to make sure you have your research done ahead of time and book a free cancellation rate (in case the claim is rejected). For maximum value, make sure you’re not from US/Canada and make sure the first night is the most expensive.

8 – Stay for free on points

The best discounted rate is a free one, right?

For the ultimate 100% discount, spend your

What if you don’t have any Choice Privileges points? Well, that’s where the Choice Hotels branded credit cards come into play if you’re located in the United States. These come with sign up bonuses after spending a certain amount in the first 3 months.

If you get 60,000 points, you’ll be able to potentially get 7 nights for free at an 8,000 redemption property like the Comfort Hotel Nara and Comfort Hotel Tokyo Kanda.

More About Choice Hotels

You may not know Choice Hotels by name but you’re probably more familiar with their family of hotel brands namely Comfort Inn, Quality Inn, and Clarion.

Choice Hotels is an American hospitality company that was founded in 1939 with seven motels in Florida which eventually their name to Quality Inns International in 1972. Their expansion began in 1981, creating, and acquiring several brands along the way, while also moving into Canada and Australia.

In more recent history, they created the Ascend Hotel Collection in 2008 and acquired Radisson Hotels Americas in 2022.

Today, they have a presence in 40 countries and territories.

For most, Best Western is in a similar class to Hampton Inn by Hilton, Hilton Garden Inn, Courtyard Marriott, Holiday Inn, Quality Inn, Comfort Inn, Howard Johnson, and Motel 6. Similar to many of these, what we always appreciate about Best Western is that continental breakfast is almost always included.

In our opinion, in totality Choice Hotels is best compared to Best Western and Radisson (outside of the Americas).

What’s In The Choice Hotels Portfolio?

The Choice Hotels brand has grown significantly, especially with their acquisitions these past few years.

Location wise, you can find in North America, Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, and Scandinavia

Choice Hotels labels their umbrella quite well. These give you an indication of their roll up from luxury down to budget.

Radisson Is Now Part of Choice Hotels

This is a bit of a complicated and confusing relationship but essentially what you need to know is that Choice Hotels acquired Radisson Hotels Americas brand and not the entire Radisson brand.

Any of the Radisson properties that operated in Canada, United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean now belong to Choice Hotels. That said, they haven’t been renamed and maintain the Radisson name.

This means that if you want to book a Radisson hotel in the Americas, you have to go to Choice Hotels but if you want to book a Radisson property anywhere else in the world, you go to Radisson.

Ways to Maximize Your Choice Privileges Membership

If you’re looking to get more invested in the Choice Privileges loyalty program, here are is more insight that’ll help you along your way.

How to Get More Choice Privileges Points

Of course, the most obvious way is to stay but if you’re not travelling for business, that’s not practical for most.

There are a few other ways that most people are building up their cache of Hilton Honors Points that we’ll quickly lay out below.

Sign up for credit cards

In the US, Hilton has their own branded cards and these are the only ones that can earn Hilton Honors points directly. Each has its own sign up bonuses and this is where you can really kickstart your stash of points.

There are unfortunately no Choice Privileges cards in Canada.

PRO TIP: Sign up for these cards when you know you have big purchases ahead so you can make the minimum spend.

Convert points from other programs

There are several rewards programs where you can transfer into the Choice Privileges program. These are:

  • American Express Membership Rewards – 1:1
  • Capital One Miles – 1:1
  • Citi ThankYou Rewards – 1:2
  • Wells Fargo Go Far Rewards – 1:2

Cards that earn Membership Rewards points are:

  • Amex EveryDay Credit Card
  • Amex Green Card
  • Amex Gold Card
  • Amex Platinum Card

Is it worth it? Similar to what we said with Hilton Honors points, this isn’t the best value when it comes to transferring points from another program. This is mainly due to the fact that

As an example Membership Rewards points are valued at 2.8 cents while Choice Privileges points are only valued at 0.6 cents. With a 1:1 transfer ratio, you’re losing significant value in MR Points.

Point accelerators

choice privileges point accelerator packages graphic

This is a hidden offer that could yield a lot of points. Called Point Accelerator Packages, you can choose to earn 1,000 points, 2,000 points, or 5,000 points per night. The catch is though is that you have to pay an additional fee for each night.

  • 1,000 points – $6.50
  • 2,000 points – $13
  • 5,000 points – $32.50

If you use a valuation of 0.6 cents per point, the amount you’re paying is a tad over but when you compare to buying points which is 1.28 cents each, this is a better deal.

Buy points

Normally, we wouldn’t say this is the best use of your money but we think it’s a good option in a pinch, especially if you need to top up your points so you can make a splash on redemption.

You can buy points in increments of 1,000 points, starting with 1,000 points and up to a maximum of 180,000 points. The price is $12.80 USD for 1,000 points (1.28 cents each). Your annual purchase limit is a maximum of 180,000 Choice Privileges points.

PRO TIP #1: When purchasing points, wait for big promotions. The best offer is when they offer a 30% off, making the cost as little as 0.72 cents each.

PRO TIP #2: If you make a reservation using cash + points but then cancel the reward stay, the reservation is deposited back to you in points. This is a sneaky way to potentially “buy” points at a lower rate.

Earn with partners

Choice Privileges offers a few special offers with partners that can help you earn extra points on the side.

  • Choice Privileges Eat & Earn – You can earn 500 points if you eat at specific restaurants and bars.
  • Choice Privileges Cruises – If you book a cruise through their platform, you get 5 points per $1 spent.
  • Avis and Budget – If you book a 3+ day car rental with Avis and Budget, get 1000 points, and up to 35% off base rates (although it’s normally just 10%).

How to Get Instant Elite Status

There are two ways to get status quickly – one is by being a member of AAA/CAA and another is by status matching.

The easiest way to instantly get Gold status is to be a member of AAA or CAA auto clubs. In both cases, the status isn’t a permanent one. It’s a onetime offer where you get an upgrade to Gold Elite status through December 31 of the following year. This requires you to stay one qualifying AAA/CAA stay and upon completion, the upgrade is appleid within 72 hours from check-out.

The second way is to do a status match if you have any elite status with another program. The nice thing about this is that it doesn’t require you to compete a stay. You can only do this once and is valid for the current and following year. it is only valid for the current year if you do the match between January – June.

PRO TIP: If you’re status matching, make sure you do it in July – December.

Sweet Spots in Redemption

osaka japan comfort hotel cheap redemption rate examples

While Choice Hotels is best known and utilized on road trips throughout Canada and the United States, the best value you’ll find in redeeming Choice Privileges points is actually in Europe and Japan.

In Japan specifically, Comfort Hotels are rather high-class than their North American counterparts.

In these locations, you’ll often find properties that easily cost 16,000 points or less.

Many Ways To Save with Choice Hotels

You might’ve come here for Choice Hotels corporate discounts but what hopefully you’ve learned that there are many other ways to get a deal with their family of properties.

The key, as with all other rewards programs, is to make sure you’re signed up for Choice Privileges since this unlocks their lowest rates. What you’ll have to decide, is whether you’re willing to pay ahead of time or you’d prefer one that can be cancelled.

From a corporate rate, the maximum discount is 25% if you’re eligible but perhaps the best deal is the ability to stay for free with the bonus points you get with one of their two credit cards.

Airport Parking: You’ll need a spot to leave your car at the airport so why not book a spot at a discount. Use code AWESOME7 to get at least $5 off at Airport Parking Reservations or Park Sleep Fly packages.

Wifi Hotspot: We’ve been a huge fan of wifi hotspot devices such as PokeFi (use code GAP24300) because their rates are are hard to beat and it works globally. Solis is another that we recommend. Pros are that you can share the wifi with your whole group but cons are that you have to invest in a device and you have to charge it every night.

eSIM: Lately, we’ve really loved using eSIMs. The one we find using the most is Airalo. Save money by getting region-specific eSIMs and use referral code WILLIA9500 to get $3 USD credit on your first purchase. Ubigi is another one that we’ve had success with where they uniquely offer 5G coverage. Use code AWESOME10 to save 10% on your first order. The newest eSIM we’ve tried is KnowRoaming that sneakily has great rates on unlimited plans. We’ve partnered with them to give you a custom code GAP10 to save you 10%.

Hotels: Our go-to is Booking.com because they have the best inventory of properties including hotels and B&Bs plus they have their Genius tier discounts. The exception is Asia where Agoda always has the best prices. TripAdvisor is also useful for reviews and bookings.

Vacation Rentals: Your first instinct will be to check Airbnb but we always recommend checking VRBO as well if you’re looking for a vacation rental.

Tours: When planning our trips, we always check both Viator and GetYourGuide to at least see what’s out there in the destination that we’re going to. They often have different offerings and prices so check both.
