Beyond just price, we’re also looking at coverage, speed, throttling for unlimited plans, and more. The table below summarizes all of our findings in one convenient spot.

Now that we’ve seen them all together, let’s break down each one including their pros and cons.

A heads up to look out for the promo codes that are available for each eSIM company.

Airalo

Airalo was one of the early players in the eSIM space and has built a strong reputation with travelers. We’ve used them multiple times in different countries and the setup process has always been straightforward through their app.

While we have an extremely positive impression of Airalo, as we’ve done a deeper dive into other companies in our original article on finding the cheapest eSIMs for travel, we’ve certainly noticed that their prices aren’t necessarily the best.

That said, Airalo is hard to fault when it comes to reliability. Their app is simple to use, activation is clear, and coverage in Japan is generally strong since they operate on major local networks.

From user experience, their customer support is one of the best so if you run into issues, they will almost always take care of it. This cannot be said for some of the smaller companies which have a much smaller support team.

  • Data: From 1GB to 20GB and unlimited.
  • Days Coverage: 3 days to 30 days.
  • Connection Speed: 4G LTE and 5G coverage (where available).

  • Hotspot Limitations: Not explicitly stated but should be unlimited.
  • Geographic Coverage: Nationwide coverage across Japan, including major cities and most rural areas.
  • Data Transfer: No.

Reliable service, extremely user-friendly app, and instant top-ups if you run out of data.

Can be slower in rural or mountainous areas compared to other providers, no local phone number for calls/SMS, and higher latency due to data roaming through international servers.  Their unlimited data throttle at 3GB could also be better.

Airalo discount code: Use code WILLIA9500 to get $3 credit for your first purchase.

aloSIM

aloSIM is another provider we’ve used multiple times, especially when their StackSocial offer pops up throughout the year, which can effectively cut the price in half.

If you look strictly at the standard pricing in the comparison table below, aloSIM’s Japan plans cost the same as Airalo. However, when the 50% promotion is active, pricing becomes much more competitive and moves closer to that of some lower-priced providers.

One of the biggest advantages we see with aloSIM is that they offer fully unthrottled unlimited data packages. This is something you don’t see with other companies.

Quality of service wise, the app was easy to use, the connection speeds were stable, and didn’t encounter any problems.

  • Data: From 1GB to 20GB and unlimited.
  • Days Coverage: 7 days to 30 days.

  • Hotspot Limitations: Not explicitly stated but should be unlimited.
  • Geographic Coverage: Nationwide coverage across Japan, including major cities and most rural areas.
  • Data Transfer: No.

Strong nationwide coverage across Japan, supports LTE and 5G, fully unthrottled unlimited plans.

Different eSIM required for each fixed-data plan, no data transfer between plans.

aloSIM discount code: Use code GOINGAWESOMEPLACES to save 15% off your first order.

For a limited time, pay $24.97 for a $50 credit on aloSIM.  We’ve purchased this several times as it effectively gives you 50% off their already excellent prices on eSIMs.

Amigo SIM

They might not be a household name yet, but this provider partners with a major network in Japan, which helps deliver reliable coverage, though it’s worth noting these are data‑only plans. There’s no local phone number included, just data.

When you look at their pricing for Japan eSIM plans, their fixed-data options sit on the higher side compared with many other providers. For Japan specifically, their plans cost more than several competing options in the same data range.

The only unfortunate thing about them is that they don’t offer any unlimited plans.

  • Coverage: 194+ countries and regions.
  • Data: From 3GB to 10GB. No unlimited.
  • Days Coverage: 14 days to 30 days.
  • Connection Speed: 5G coverage (where available).
  • Carrier: KDDI and SoftBank
  • eSIM Downloads: Different eSIM for each package. Regional plans are a single eSIM.
  • Hotspot Limitations: Unlimited.
  • Geographic Coverage: Japan (no limitations mentioned).
  • Data Transfer: No.

They are one of the few eSIM companies that also provide calling as well in some cases and they have access to 5G.

Does not offer unlimited plans. Pricier compared to other brands.

Amigo SIM discount code: Use code GOINGAWESOMEPLACES for 25% off all orders.

Eskimo

Eskimo might not be the most recognizable eSIM brand yet, but we first came across them when they were offering free global eSIMs upon sign up.

What sets Eskimo apart are four things: 1) The default validity of eSIMs is 2 years, which is best-in-class, 2) they use a single eSIM, 3) data rollover, and 4) data transfer.

Single eSIM is significant because for most companies, you’re required to install a different eSIM per region or country.

Data rollover is another feature that many will appreciate. If you have unused data, they can roll it over to future top-ups.

Lastly, their data transfer feature is helpful for group travel. If someone in your travel group also has an active Eskimo eSIM installed (fixed-data plans only), you can transfer a minimum of 500MB to them. This means you could buy a larger Japan plan at a better rate and split the data between friends or family if someone runs low during the trip.

  • Coverage: 140+ countries.
  • Data: From 1GB to 10GB and unlimited.
  • Days Coverage: 2 years.
  • Connection Speed: 4G LTE and 5G coverage (where available).
  • Carrier: Softbank and KDDI.
  • eSIM Download: Single eSIM.
  • Unlimited Throttle Policy: 3 GB usage per day, after which the speed will drop to 1 Mbps.
  • Hotspot Limitations: Unlimited.
  • Geographic Coverage: Japan (no limitations mentioned).
  • Data Transfer: Yes.

Incredibly long 2 year validity which shatters the competition, is affordable, offers data rollover, data sharing, and is compatible with most devices. Also uniquely uses a single eSIM across the board.  Get free 500MB global eSIM with referral code.

Set up instructions aren’t the most detailed.  Unlimited package throttle at 3GB is not the best.

Eskimo discount code: Use gift code GAP1GB to get 1GB of global data for free. Also, every first purchase is 50% off if made within 30 days (up to $15).

eSIMx

If you read our article on the cheapest eSIMs for travel, you’ll see that they offer the best prices and this remains when we look at eSIMS for Japan travel.

Overall, eSIMx feels a bit more no-frills compared to some of the bigger names. They do have an app, but when you compare it with others, it is not quite as polished or packed with features.

At the end of the day though, it is hard to beat their prices. It is honestly surprising that you can get 10GB for less than $10.

The trade-off is that you will not get 5G service. That said, I have not been a big fan of 5G so far. In real-life use, I have often found it to be less consistent and sometimes slower when the signal is weak compared to 4G.

  • Coverage: 200+ digital SIM cards.
  • Data: From 1GB to 20GB. No unlimited.
  • Days Coverage: 7 days to 30 days.
  • Connection Speed: 4G LTE coverage.
  • Carrier: Unknown.
  • eSIM Download: Different eSIM for each package. Regional plans are a single eSIM.
  • Hotspot Limitations: Unknown.
  • Geographic Coverage: Japan (no limitations mentioned).
  • Data Transfer: No.

Cheapest prices on the market and all-around solid service.

No 5G service, limited global data options, and no unlimited packages.

eSIMx discount code: Use code ESIMX10 for 10% off all orders.

Flexiroam

For Mastercard users, this is one provider you may want to have set up. Flexiroam has a special partnership with them that gives you a permanent 20% discount on all packages. Certain World and World Elite cards also come with 1 or 3 free 1GB Global Data Plan eSIMs that are valid for five days.

My main gripe with them is that they do not commit to any particular speeds, so we could not even confirm whether they have access to 5G. On top of that, their fair use policy does not clearly state what speeds you drop to after exceeding 3GB per day on an unlimited package.

When it comes to pricing, Flexiroam’s fixed-data plans for Japan compare fairly well with other providers. That said, the same cannot really be said for their unlimited plans, which tend to be more expensive. We also wish they offered more variety in data sizes since the current options are limited to 10GB, 20GB, 50GB, and 100GB.

Lastly, they also offer a FlexiShare feature. Similar to Eskimo, this lets you transfer fixed-data plans to other members of your group who also have an active Flexiroam eSIM, as long as it is the same data plan.

  • Coverage: 200+ countries and regions.
  • Data: From 10GB to 100GB and unlimited.
  • Days Coverage: 3 days to 15 days.
  • Connection Speed: Will automatically connect to the strongest signal in your destination country from the available operators so they do not promise any speeds.
  • Carrier: Unknown.
  • eSIM Download: Different eSIM for each package. Unlimited plans and regional plans are a single eSIM.
  • Unlimited Throttle Policy: 3 GB usage per day, after which “either a low speed will prevail, or services will cease until the following day.”
  • Hotspot Limitations: Not explicitly stated but should be unlimited.
  • Geographic Coverage: Japan (no limitations mentioned).
  • Data Transfer: Yes.

They have a partnership with Mastercard so if you have one of the premium cards, you’ll be eligible for 20% off.  They also have a Flexishare feature if two people have the same fixed data plan.

Mostly 4G/LTE and limited global data options and don’t love that they can cut your data for their unlimited packages.  The eligible Mastercard cards (see the full list in our cheapest eSIM article) seems much more restrictive than the Visas for Gigsky. Lastly, the 10GB package validity for 3 days is very short.

Flexiroam discount code: Use code FLEX20 to save 20% off of your first plan.

Gigsky

Similar to Flexiroam, GigSky has a partnership with Visa that gives eligible cardholders a free global data plan each year. For Japan, that typically means you can redeem a small fixed-data plan (often around 1GB–3GB depending on the promotion).

We’ve used GigSky before when taking advantage of their free eSIM offer, and new users usually receive a small amount of starter data (around 500MB for a limited number of days) after signing up.

Outside of those promotions, though, GigSky’s standard Japan pricing tends to sit on the higher end compared to competitors. To make it worthwhile, you’ll usually want to stack a discount code or use the Visa benefit to bring the overall cost down.

  • Coverage: 190+ countries.
  • Data: From 100MB to 100GB and unlimited.
  • Days Coverage: 7 days to 180 days.
  • Connection Speed: Primarily 5G, though some regions in Japan may be at 4G or 3G speeds.
  • Carrier: Unknown.
  • eSIM Download: Different eSIM for each package. Unlimited plans and regional plans are a single eSIM.
  • Unlimited Throttle Policy: 2.5 GB usage per day, after which the speed will drop until the start of the next 24 hour duration from when you activated the plan. The reduced speed may vary depending on network coverage and traffic congestion.
  • Hotspot Limitations: Unlimited.
  • Geographic Coverage: Japan (no limitations mentioned).
  • Data Transfer: No.

Their Visa program is a standout especially because for some programs the eSIMs refresh every 6 months. The 20% discount we have also puts their prices closer to par with the competitors.

Not necessarily the cheapest in price.

Gigsky discount code: Use code GOINGAWESOME to save 20% off of all eSIM orders. Also use TANG149 to get $3 USD when you first sign up.

Holafly

Holafly focuses almost entirely on unlimited data plans. One thing that makes them a bit different is the flexibility with trip length. Instead of choosing from fixed durations like most providers, you can select the exact number of days you need.

That said, there is one limitation to be aware of. Holafly places a hotspot cap, usually around 500MB per day. Compared with most competitors, that is fairly restrictive. If you plan to tether a laptop or share data across multiple devices, it is something worth keeping in mind.

In terms of pricing, they sit somewhere in the middle of the pack. The 5% discount code we include below helps bring the price down a little, but it still does not make them the cheapest option.

  • Coverage: 270+ destinations.
  • Data: Unlimited-only.
  • Days Coverage: 1 day to 90 days.
  • Connection Speed: 4G LTE and 5G coverage (where available).
  • Carrier: KDDI and Softbank.
  • eSIM Download: Different eSIM for each country if purchased individually. Unlimited plans and regional plans are a single eSIM.
  • Unlimited Throttle Policy: No explicit cap but the network reserves the right to impose restrictions if usage deemed excessive.
  • Hotspot Limitations: Up to 500MB.
  • Geographic Coverage: Japan (no limitations mentioned).
  • Data Transfer: No.

Great prices on unlimited data eSIM packages. In fact, the prices for individual countries vs. regions are the same so you might as well opt for a regional package.

Some travelers have had bad experiences with them, particularly around getting refunds and the countries that are covered in their regional packages.  They also have a cap on how much data can be shared through your phone’s hotspot.

Holafly discount code: Use code GOINGAWESOMEPLACES to save 5% off of all eSIM orders.

KnowRoaming

We’ve been using KnowRoaming for a long time, starting with their sticker SIMs back in the day. We also tried their eSIMs on a trip to Tuscany, and they worked without any issues.

They have a partnership with Visa that gives eligible cardholders 25% off eSIM plans. Keep in mind, though, this only applies to users in the Middle East, Africa, and France.

As for pricing, they sit somewhere in the middle, even when using our GAP10 discount code.

  • Coverage: 200+ destinations.
  • Data: From 1GB to 50GB and unlimited.
  • Days Coverage: 7 days to 60 days.
  • Connection Speed: 4G LTE and 5G coverage (where available).
  • Carrier: Unknown.
  • eSIM Download: Different eSIM for each country if purchased individually. Unlimited plans and regional plans are a single eSIM.
  • Unlimited Throttle Policy: 5 GB usage per day, after which the speed will drop to 512 Kbps until the start of your next 24 hour period from the time of activation.
  • Hotspot Limitations: Unknown.
  • Geographic Coverage: Japan (no limitations mentioned).
  • Data Transfer: No.

Easy to setup with the app and top up.

Slowest-in-class speed throttling for unlimited packages.  Visa promo only works in Middle East & Africa and France.

KnowRoaming discount code: Use code GAP10 to save 10% off of all eSIM orders.

Maya Mobile

They are easily one of theeSIM companies with competitive pricing out there if you’ve read the article where we dove into a variety of countries and regions. While competitors like Ubigi or Airalo often lead for small, fixed data packs, Maya Mobile is typically the cheapest option for unlimited data in the Japanese market (for 10 days plan).

Maya Mobile keeps things simple and to the point travelers are often surprised to find they don’t have a dedicated mobile app. Instead, you handle everything, from initial purchase to real-time usage tracking and top-ups, directly through their website.

For Japan, Maya’s unlimited plans provide 3GB of high-speed data per day. If you exceed this limit, speeds are temporarily throttled to 10 Mbps (which is still fast enough for HD streaming and video calls), and may only drop to 1 Mbps if usage remains extreme.

Unlike other providers that cap sharing, Maya allows you to use your full data allowance for hotspotting other devices.

  • Coverage: 200+ destinations.
  • Data: From 5GB to 50GB and unlimited.
  • Days Coverage: 5 days to 180 days.
  • Connection Speed: 4G LTE and 5G coverage (where available).
  • Carrier: KDDI and Rakuten.
  • eSIM Download: Different eSIM for each country if purchased individually. Unlimited plans and regional plans are a single eSIM.
  • Unlimited Throttle Policy: 3 GB of high-speed data daily, but if exceeded, speeds are throttled to 10 Mbps. Only extreme continued usage drops speeds to 1 Mbps, and any throttle resets every 24 hours based on your activation time.
  • Hotspot Limitations: Unlimited.
  • Geographic Coverage: Japan (no limitations mentioned).
  • Data Transfer: No.

You can choose the trip length that you want and the price will adjust, providing users extra flexibility.

They do not have an app so you’ll have to manage your eSIM through their website. Throttle policy for unlimited policy (3GB) is not the best.

Maya Mobile discount code: Use our link to save 11% off of all eSIM orders.

Roamless

Roamless doesn’t offer any unlimited plans, but they stand out because they have a pay-as-you-go option.

When it comes to price, they aren’t the cheapest, but they also don’t sit at the top end. Even with our 20% discount code, they remain somewhere in the middle.

For the pay-as-you-go plan, it’s effectively valid worldwide. Every gigabyte costs $2.45, which works well if you’re not sure exactly how much data you’ll need but know it won’t be a lot.

  • Coverage: 200+ countries.
  • Data: From 500MB to 20GB. No unlimited but offers pay-as-you-go.
  • Days Coverage: 30 days.
  • Connection Speed: 4G LTE and 5G coverage (where available).
  • Carrier: KDDI.
  • eSIM Download: Different eSIM for each country if purchased individually. Unlimited plans and regional plans are a single eSIM.
  • Hotspot Limitations: Unlimited.
  • Geographic Coverage: Japan (no limitations mentioned).
  • Data Transfer: No.

Their coverage is a flat 30 day and also has a unique pay-as-you-go option. Add these promo codes in this specific order: ROAM25, ROAM50, and then finally ROAM75 on the app immediately after creating a new account. App is also well-designed.

They do not offer unlimited plans.

Roamless discount code: Use AWESOME20 to save 20% on all packages.

Saily

Saily has become a bigger name in the market, partly thanks to their NordVPN background and the extra features they offer that many competitors don’t.

With their data eSIM, you also get a built-in VPN, ad blocking, and protection against online threats.

Another thing you’ll notice is that they allow a generous amount of data before throttling and even then, you’re still getting 1Mbps in speed.

Price-wise, even with the discount, they sit somewhere in the middle. That said, the extra features are worth factoring in when comparing value.

  • Coverage: 200+ destinations.
  • Data: From 1GB to 20GB and unlimited.
  • Days Coverage: 7 days to 30 days.
  • Connection Speed: 3G/4G/LTE/5G (where available).
  • Carrier: Unknown.
  • eSIM Download: Same eSIM can be re-used (has the option to create multiple eSIMs if you’d like).
  • Unlimited Throttle Policy: Unlimited data up to 5 GB after which it’s throttled to 1 Mbps.
  • Hotspot Limitations: Unlimited.
  • Geographic Coverage: Japan (no limitations mentioned but they do say “Please note that coverage quality will depend on local network providers.”).
  • Data Transfer: No.

You can use one eSIM for all destinations and packages.  Has built-in security features such as blocking ads and malicious URLs.  Unlimited data allowance at 5GB is decent.

Saily discount code: Use code GAP15 to save 15% on all orders.

Ubigi

The last provider is Ubigi. We first came across them because they were one of the earlier companies offering 5G support. These days, 5G is more common across Japan eSIM providers, but Ubigi was ahead of the curve back then.

For Japan specifically, Ubigi runs on major local networks such as KDDI & NTT Docomo, which means strong coverage in major cities and generally solid performance across the country. One thing we appreciate is that they’re fairly transparent about coverage and speed expectations, though like all providers, performance can vary depending on location.

An advantage that Ubigi has is that they allow the same eSIM to be re-used and their throttling only after you go beyond 60GB in 30 days which you’ll unlikely do.

Lastly, for price, their fixed-data and unlimited prices are some of the best.

  • Coverage: 200+ destinations.
  • Data: From 1GB to 60GB and unlimited.
  • Days Coverage: 1 day to 30 days.
  • Connection Speed: 3G/4G/5G coverage (where available)
  • Carrier: KDDI and NTT Docomo.
  • eSIM Download: Same eSIM can be re-used.
  • Unlimited Throttle Policy: 60 GB usage per 30 days, after which the speed will drop to 1 Mbps.
  • Hotspot Limitations: Unlimited.
  • Geographic Coverage: Japan (no limitations mentioned).
  • Data Transfer: No.

They offer the largest cap before throttling for unlimited data plans and also allows for the same eSIM to be used for many packages.

Their global plans are expensive.

Ubigi discount code: Use code AWESOME10 to save 10% on your first order.

Japan eSIM Price Comparison Table

Note that these prices are in USD.

Additional Japan eSIM Options

Here are some other solid eSIM options to check out:

  • Klook: Lesser-known as an eSIM provider but popular in the activity space in Asia. They offer low-cost eSIMs and they happen to have a Japan product that’s quite cheap as you can see from the table above. They also frequently give out free eSIM data as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

What territories in the Japan do eSIM packages typically include?

From our research, most providers don’t explicitly share detailed coverage maps, so it’s worth checking with them directly. Based on our experience, eSIMs for Japan typically cover the entire country, including major cities like Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Sapporo, as well as rural areas, mountains, and islands. Coverage generally relies on major networks such as NTT Docomo, KDDI, and SoftBank to ensure reliable connections across all prefectures.

Japan Trip Planning Essentials And Discounts

If you’re in the middle of booking your trip to Japan, here are the most important places you need to go to book:

JR Pass

The two most reliable places we always check are JRailPass and JRPass. If you are taking long distance Shinkansen across multiple region, get the full JR Pass. If you’re focusing on one specific area, you only need a JR regional pass. The official booking platform is Smart-Ex.

Shinkansen

The JR Pass prices have gone up and for many of you, it’ll make more sense to book tickets individually. The secret is that when you buy your Shinkansen tickets through Klook offers special vouchers for Don Quijote and BIC when booking. Their tickets are super easy to redeem as well. Right now, use code SKS10OFF to save $10 USD off.

Hotels/Ryokans

In Japan, the best website for accommodations, hands down is Agoda. When we’ve compared them against Booking, Agoda consistently came out cheaper.

Tours

While Viator and GetYourGuide are our go-to’s, Klook and KKDay are much popular in Asia so it’s always worth comparing across all of them to make sure you get the best price. With Klook, use code GOINGAWESOMEPLACES to save up to 8% for new users and 3% for existing users.

Pocket Wifi

While we do love eSIMs, having a pocket wifi is great for sharing data with a large group. The most popular is NinjaWifi which is easy to pick up at the airport. Use code AWESOME15 to save 15% (automatically applied). Alternatives are offered by JRPass and JRailPass but they aren’t as cheap. For a more global solution, consider Solis and PokeFi.

Car Rental

Big companies such as BudgetAvis, and Enterprise operate in Japan but they’re usually the most expensive. The best companies are the local Japanese ones such as Toyota, Nippon, Orix, Nissan, and Times Car Rental. To make things easier, use Booking’s car rental platform and Klook to compare prices all in one place. Don’t forget, you need an IDP to drive in Japan so get one before you leave your home country.

Learn Japanese

It helps to know even a bit of the language before you go. Start your learning with Rosetta Stone Japanese.

Cash or Credit

Cash is still very important to have in Japan but when you use credit cards, make sure you’re not getting charged those extra exchange rate fees. The best card right now is the Wise Multi-Currency Card which is actually a debit card where you can convert at favorable rates beforehand. This cuts out any sneaky transaction fees.

Travel Insurance

Make sure you’re covered in case something happens. Get quotes from HeyMondo where booking through our link gets you 5% off automatically and if you’re from Canada, get quotes from RATESDOTCA.

Shopping

Discovering Don Quijote is a quintessential part of the Japan experience. The secret for tax-free shopping is that they have a coupon that can help you save 10% off + additional 5% off if you spend ¥10,000 or more.  If you’re interested in coupons like this, we have them stored on our Goodies page that Insiders can access.  Join today!
