What To Pack For Alicante

Alicante is one of those destinations where you’ll spend most of your time outdoors, whether that’s relaxing on Playa del Postiguet, exploring Santa Bárbara Castle, wandering the Old Town and centro de Alicante, or taking day trips along the Costa Blanca. The Mediterranean climate means plenty of sunshine for most of the year, so packing light while being prepared for long days of sightseeing is the way to go. These are the essentials we’d recommend bringing to Alicante.

  • Comfortable walking shoes – Alicante’s Old Town is full of narrow streets, hills and cobblestone walkways. A comfortable pair of walking shoes will make exploring the city and climbing up to Santa Bárbara Castle much more enjoyable.
  • Reusable water bottle – The Costa Blanca enjoys over 300 days of sunshine each year, making hydration essential, especially during the warmer months. A refillable bottle will save you money and keep you refreshed while sightseeing.
  • Swimsuit – Even if you’re staying in the city center, Alicante’s beaches are never far away. Having a swimsuit packed means you’ll always be ready for a spontaneous beach afternoon or sunset swim.
  • Sun hat – Whether you’re exploring the castle, strolling the waterfront promenade, or relaxing on the beach, a wide-brimmed hat provides much-needed protection from the strong Mediterranean sun.
  • Sunscreen – The Spanish sun can be surprisingly intense, even outside of peak summer. Pack a quality sunscreen to protect your skin during long days outdoors.
  • Lightweight daypack – Perfect for carrying water, snacks, sunscreen, a camera, and any purchases you make while exploring the city or visiting local markets.
  • Portable power bank – Between Google Maps, restaurant recommendations, ride-sharing apps, and taking photos of Alicante’s colorful streets and coastline, your phone battery can drain quickly throughout the day.
  • Light sweater or jacket – Evenings along the waterfront can feel cooler than expected, particularly during spring, fall, and winter. A lightweight layer is usually all you’ll need.
  • Universal travel adapter – Spain uses Type C and Type F electrical outlets. If you’re traveling from North America, the UK, or elsewhere, a universal adapter will keep your devices charged and ready to go.
  • Packable beach towel – While many Airbnb’s provide towels for the apartment, they often aren’t intended for beach use. A compact microfiber towel is lightweight, dries quickly, and takes up very little luggage space.

Your Perfect Alicante Home Base Awaits

Whether you’re planning a beach holiday, a city break, or a longer stay on the Costa Blanca, Alicante offers a fantastic range of vacation rentals to suit different travel styles and budgets. Staying in an apartment gives you the flexibility to enjoy the city at your own pace, whether that’s sipping coffee on a private terrace, walking to the beach each morning, or exploring the historic streets around Santa Bárbara Castle.

The best Alicante vacation rental for you will ultimately depend on what you want from your trip. Couples may prefer a stylish loft in the historic centre, beach lovers will appreciate being close to the Mediterranean, while families and groups can benefit from larger apartments with extra space. No matter which option you choose, Alicante’s combination of sunshine, culture, great food, and coastal scenery makes it one of Spain’s most rewarding city escapes.

Travel Resources For Your Next Trip

If you’re in the process of planning your trip and putting together your itinerary, these are genuinely the best resources that the Going Awesome Places team stands by 100%.

Credit Cards

Don’t get burned by hidden fees on top of terrible exchange rates. When we travel now, we use the Wise Card. Simply load it with the currency you need before you go (at close to market rates) and use it as a regular VISA or their digital wallet card. Track your spending on the app and top up when you need.

Flights

In our opinion, of all the booking search engines, Skyscanner is the most helpful and easy to use thanks to their Everywhere feature. Kayak is also another that’s we will often check.

Rideshare

You probably already have accounts but if you don’t, for new Lyft users, use code WILLIAM4825 to get 50% off your first 2 rides (max $10 per ride). Offer valid for 14 days after you take your first ride. For new Uber users, use code cbh4j6plxt8p for the same offer except it’s valid for 30 days.

FERRIES

If you’re looking for one place to search for ferry options instead of going to each operator, we recommend FerryHopper as the first place to start.

Wifi Hotspot

We’ve been a huge fan of wifi hotspot devices such as PokeFi (use code GAP24300) because their rates are are hard to beat and it works globally. Solis is another that we recommend. Pros are that you can share the wifi with your whole group but cons are that you have to invest in a device and you have to charge it every night.

Hotels

Our go-to is Booking.com because they have the best inventory of properties including hotels and B&Bs plus they have their Genius tier discounts. Expedia is also worth using especially with their One Key rewards program which is basically like cash. The exception is Asia where Agoda always has the best prices. Always do a quick check on TripAdvisor as well.

Vacation Rentals

Your first instinct will be to go to Airbnb but we always recommend checking VRBO as well if you’re looking for a vacation rental (now eligible for One Key).

Tours and Activities

When planning our trips, we always check both Viator and GetYourGuide to at least see what’s out there in the destination that we’re going to. They often have different offerings and prices so check both.

Travel Insurance

Learn how to buy the best travel insurance for you. This isn’t something you want to travel without.

  • HeyMondo – Popular insurance provider for frequent travelers and comes with great coverage and special perks. By booking through our link to get a 5% discount!
  • RATESDOTCA – Search engine Canadians looking for the cheapest insurance including multi-trip annual policies.
